We need your help
‘The Centre is looking amazing, I can’t believe what you have done in just over a year’!
And quite frankly it is, when I look at the place and then the photos of when I came back, when I list the jobs that we have done, it is nothing short of staggering. That is a quote that is said more often than many, and it is almost all due to our amazing team of volunteers and my hard working staff.
I am regularly asked if we need volunteers and the answer is yes as long as you understand that probably 90% of the work that we all do here is not with the birds. As a volunteer here you will not be standing around all day with a bird on your fist, or feeding round, or flying birds by the ton. I have very strong feelings about some of the jobs here and for example feeding the birds is a job that must have daily consistency, so it is only done by the full time staff and always will be.
But the volunteers here do make things so much better for the birds themselves and the visitors, and as we go on and get more organised, those volunteers who come very regularly and so become a part of the team here really do get involved with the birds over time. Some days, especially if we have an Experience Day going on, you may not get to handle birds, some days we are just working too hard on a project. BUT everything you do, be it painting the inside or outside of aviaries, raking the paths, cleaning the baths, and a hundred other jobs is really important to us, and makes a difference. These are the kind of jobs that need to be done:
all sorts of carpentry - bring a hammer
painting - you had better like magnolia!
hedge and tree cutting - especially if you have tools
grass cutting - it's a jungle; bring a machete!
path laying - only for the tough
demolition - my personal favourite
unpacking and putting away - for the perfectionist
bird handling - has to be experienced to start with
fetching and carrying stuff until mid Jan, birds after that
cleaning and catering - unless you want bread and marmite!
