One-day Experience Courses - the Hunting Day

This is not a day for the faint hearted or the unfit as you will be doing a fair bit of walking, scrambling over fences and in the winter ploughing through mud, so you need to be used to walking. You may also see the hawk catch quarry in a natural habitat and so those who don’t think they would like that aspect should choose another day.

The day starts at 10.00 with initial training and handling a bird just so you know what to do. A quick coffee and you will leave the Centre with the falconer for the hunting grounds. Bear in mind there will be some time spent in driving to good grounds.

The morning will be spent on a farm where we have permission to hunt where you will be hunting with one hawk, you will be doing what we all do out hawking, walking beating for game, and watching the bird doing the work.

This is followed by lunch provided either back at the Centre, if the hunting grounds are not far away or a picnic, with hot soup if the weather is cold and a break with the birds will give participants time to recover for the afternoon.

You may then move to another farm, depending on the success of the morning, and continue hunting with the birds. You will return to the Centre by 4.30. You must wear sensible walking and weather proof clothing on this day as you will be out for most of the time. A walking stick is also useful.
