Captive Breeding

ICBP has always endeavoured to encourage the birds to breed. This is a natural behaviour for the birds and fulfils their purpose in life, making their life in captivity more complete. It is also a huge resource for gaining knowledge and understanding of raptors which is often unavailable to the scientist monitoring nesting behaviour in the wild.

The Centre does not get involved in breeding birds for any breeding and release schemes at this point, because we don’t breed enough birds of any single species to make a release scheme viable. Nevertheless the expertise gained in many species over the years, has and is being used to assist and advise on breeding and release programmes in many other parts of the world.

Most of the birds that fly at the daily demonstrations are home bred birds and many species have worked here over several generations, which again gives unique insight into the birds’ physical and mental being. Others working birds are bred by friends and breeders around the UK. The UK leads the world in the captive breeding field.
